GOTHAM INCORPORATED PODCAST

  • Ask us, Gotham!
I just want to kind of take a second and explain why all of these new/rebooted Bat-titles are bothering me on more than just a creative level, or cheap pandering to a new audience, or cashing in on outside media characters, or the the overall initiative of DC Comics. For me, this era of Dick Grayson as Batman, Damian Wayne as Robin, Stephanie Brown as Batgirl, Tim Drake as Red Robin, etc., it represents a time in my life.
We started this podcast as a way for fellow Batman fans to listen to us talk about all of the Batman related comics that a lot of Batman fans may have not been able to read. It was a way to take the “confusing” landscape of Gotham City and simplify it, and I know we may not have had the most listeners, or followers, or retweets, or reblogs, or whatever, but I think we lived up to that goal. We started at approximately the arrival of Batman and Robin, so Dick Grayson was the Batman of The Gotham Central Podcast. He may not be my Batman, Tim’s Batman, or Justin’s Batman, but he was THE Batman for the entire 100+ episodes that we’ve recorded over the past couple of years.
We’ve made A LOT of friends through this show including creators, other podcasters, other bloggers, listeners, and fans of Batman, alike. Not everyone has like Grant Morrison’s direction, and not everyone has like Dick Grayson as Batman, but a lot of us did. So, all of this change and ignoring of a lot of books that we really hold in our hearts seem gone, or unimportant, at this point. But it is to us.
So much has happened in the Batman universe in the way of progression over the past two years, and true… a lot of characters (Cassandra Cain) have been overlooked, but that doesn’t change the fact that characters grew into better heroes than they ever were prior. Christ.. we got to see a lesbian/punk rocker/heiress/military hero as Batwoman headlining Detective Comics! There’s no way that would have happened had Bruce Wayne not been sent back in time. We got to see Bryan Q. Miller take a ten year old murderer and a layer of depth that no other creator had been able to see before then. We saw Stephanie fucking Brown become a legitimate hero! That would have never happened without Battle for The Cowl and Cass Cain abandoning the mantle of Batgirl. As Red Robin, Tim Drake become a bad ass globe trotting sidekick to no one! That’s so awesome!
Anyway, all of these things were not just awesome milestones of a beautiful time for comics, but each of these things symbolize a great time in our lives, and I know I can speak for Tim and Justin when I say that. It’s just sad to see all of this go, is all.
I just wanted to thank all of you for not only becoming listeners/followers, but a lot of you, I consider friends. Thanks for dealing with a bunch of nerdy 20-somethings that love Batman way too much. Thanks again.
